    It's a genuine relationship -- continuous and potentially strong. There are places for deep, engaged friendships, and important places and roles for light ones as well. It would be tragic, for example, if cross-guard Tommy were to be a casualty of one of the speeding cars in the intersection in which he safely stewards students and commuters.
